Welcome
On behalf of the Library faculty and staff, I would like to welcome all new students,
faculty, and staff to the School of Medicine and welcome back our returning
students.
Renovation
It has been another busy summer of renovation activity. Over the summer, with the
excellent assistance of the Physical Facilities and Auxiliary Services staff, we packed
the entire journal collection into 3,700 boxes and moved them into storage along with
the study carrels. At this writing, the contractors have completed the majority of their
work, the shelving is being reinstalled, and the study carrels are back in place. We will
be re-opening the second floor shortly and begin moving the journal collection back
onto the shelves. I believe that you will be pleased with the renovation results. You will
find four large group study rooms, increased space for the study carrels area, additional
page phones, a new history of medicine room, and a much improved look that matches
the first floor decor. The Library is planning an open house in early October to
celebrate the new space.
2000-2001 Accomplishments
As we begin the new academic year, it's appropriate to reflect on a few of the Library's
major accomplishments during the past year. In addition to completing two major
renovation projects, the Library faculty and staff had a highly productive year.
Expanded information resources
- 35 new journal subscriptions. (These additions represent the first substantial
addition of new journal titles to the Library's collection since 1994.)
- 1,200 new full text electronic journals via ScienceDirect.
- Stat!-Ref, a collection of 31 full-text electronic medical textbooks.
- More MD Consult licenses to accommodate more simultaneous users.
- Numerous new links to e-journals on the Library's web page.
Improved access to databases and e-journals via Library web
page.
- The e-journal web page now offers users the ability to browse titles by subject,
search titles by keyword, and browse features alphabetically.
- The database page now features an alphabetic pull down list, links to more
databases, and is arranged by subject category.
Enhanced remote access to electronic resources
- Implemented remote access for students at Greenville Hospital System and faculty
in the South Carolina Cancer Center and the Department of Family & Preventive
medicine using the SOM Virtual Private Network.
- Began offering electronic document delivery of interlibrary loan requests to users.
New partnerships and collaborations
- Formed a new partnership with the Center for Disability Resources and integrated
their library collection into the SOM Library.
- Partnered with MUSC Library on the Hands-On-Health grant project. (See related article in this issue.)
- Participated in the submission of the NIH grant proposal for the SC Biomedical
Research Infrastructure Network (BRIN) and agreed to serve as the Bioinformatics
Core for the project.
- Partnered with the Office of Curricular Affairs by having Library faculty serve as
facilitators for the problem-based learning small groups.
- Provided Leadership to the state-wide academic library consortium, Partnership
Among SC Academic Libraries (PASCAL).
I would like to thank the Library faculty and staff for their excellent work this past year.
The renovation projects have absorbed a significant amount of their time and energy.
As evidenced by the above accomplishments, they performed at a very high level and
helped strengthen the Library's resources and services while also enduring the
challenges of renovation.

The Library is partnering with the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) Library
on a new project, Hands-On-Health, funded by the Duke Endowment. The overall
project goal is to promote healthier citizens and healthier communities in our state. The
primary vehicle will be a website populated with information resources and links to
high-quality, easy-to-use, and appropriate health and wellness websites. Special
attention
will be paid to health issues of particular import to South Carolina citizens and
communities.
The partnership of the MUSC Library and the USC SOM Library brings expertise in
health information management and access. The South Carolina State Library and the
South Carolina Hospital Association are the other major partners. The SOM Library
has agreed to maintain two subject areas of the Hands-on-Health website -- disabilities
and AIDS. Roz McConnaughy and Lisa Antley-Hearn are the key SOM Library
members who will be working on the project. The project is still in the construction
phase. For more information, please visit the Hands-On-Health website at http://www.handsonhealth-sc.com/.

PUBMED
Recent Enhancements
An interactive NLM PubMed Tutorial has just recently become available! Access to it
appears on the sidebar on the PubMed main
page. As a PubMed user you can access this training from the comfort of your
own
office. PubMed is evolving rapidly, and knowing how to use it effectively is becoming
more and more important.
You may have noticed that the School of Medicine Library is now an active participant
in the PubMed Linkout feature which not only shows a Publisher Icon at the article
level in PubMed, but will now also show the USC-SOM Logo in garnet and black to let
you know that our library supports online access through PubMed to this particular title.
Our patrons can now access over 700 of the 4000 journal titles indexed in Medline.
However, broken links and problems with access all years available online through a
publisher are not infrequent. Please feel free to call about any problem you have in
accessing a particular title which you believe we should have access to, but with which
you are having problems. This new Linkout feature is fantastic, but it does require
maintenance on our side, and also relies on the publishers sending correct information
to PubMed.
Access to fulltext is growing rapidly in PubMed. Over 2000 of the 4000 indexed titles
are now potentially available in fulltext through PubMed. Please bear in mind, however,
that our Library has had to make arrangements with publishers to gain this access
which includes having a subscription, paying extra fees, or required usernames and
passwords.
PubMed links to fulltext of 350 of the biomedically related 110 ScienceDirect titles. If
you would like to check to see if a title you are particularly interested in is available in
fulltext through PubMed, use the Journal Browser option, and there is an alphabetic,
as well as a publisher listing. The Single Citation Matcher has been enhanced, with a
title words box added.
Internet Grateful Med search interface is being phased out and will no longer be
accessible in September 2001.
The following databases, accessible at the NLM only via Internet Grateful Med during
2000, were all closed in December 2000. During February - September, they will all
cease to exist as separate NLM Databases:

Staff Spotlight:
Roz McConnaughy
The School of Medicine Library shines its
spotlight this quarter on Roz McConnaughy, Coordinator of the Center for Disability
Resources Library. Roz hails from Carrollton, Ohio. She graduated from East Carolina
University with a BA in Psychology and a minor in Geography. Her interest in the
"Information Age" and all its opportunities led her to pursue a Master's degree in Library
and Information Science. "My Mom used to call me a librarian when I was little
because
I was always reading books," she says. She graduated with her MLIS from USC's
School of Library and Information Science in May 2001. Besides reading, Roz enjoys
outdoor activities, including camping, hiking, canoeing, yoga, and volleyball. She is a
welcome addition to the School of Medicine Library faculty.
